Q: What do the Kickstarter Exclusive Track Tiles do?
A: The rules for these were released during the campaign and can be found at the bottom of the HOW TO PLAY page.
Q: Some places on the site / videos say 2-4 players but the main page says 1-4?
A: The game began life as 2-4 players only, but during the Kickstarter campaign, we unlocked a 'Solo Rules' stretch goal, making Off the Rails 1-4 players.
Q: What is the “Chasm Card”?
A: The Chasm Card is a single specific Deposit Card that shows a hole and no Jewels.
It should be shuffled into the Deposit Deck at the start of the game (see Prepare the Deposit Deck on page 2).
When drawn, this card triggers the end of the game (See End Game – The Chasm on page 7).
Q: What is “The Chasm Deck”?
A: The Chasm Deck is simply 4 Deposit Cards (1 of each colour) set aside at the start of the game. These will be revealed at the start of the “End Game” to begin the Chasm.
Q: Colour blind players struggle with red and green gems. Will this be in the final version?
A: For colour blind players, I will be supplying print and play tokens with icons for Jewels.
Q: What are the black and white dice for?
A: Each player should take one black and one white dice at the start of the game and place inside their minecarts. The number on the die will depict the speed of the minecart and the colour of the die will reflect which Minecart Board relates to which Minecart.
Q: If I have a minecart in my supply when the Chasm begins, can it come back into play?
A: Yes! Only Minecarts that are Derailed during the Chasm are not allowed to return to the game. Minecart’s in your supply can be placed as normal.
Q: Does a minecart need to LAND on the surface square exactly? E.g. I am 1 square away with a movement of 3 – can I still drop off my Jewels?
A: Yes! To ‘reach the surface’ is interpreted as to have enough movement to AT LEAST reach the square. Any excess movement is ignored.
Q: Can I use more than one action to increase the speed of a single minecart?
A: Yes! You can increase or decrease your speed as many times as you have remaining actions. E.g. A speed of 2 can be increased to 4 with two actions. A minecart can’t go faster than 6 or slower than 1 however.
Q: Can I use move over or onto a mine? Can I build tracks on top of one?
A: No to both. If your movement would cause you to land on or pass over a mine, that minecart is DERAILED. You may never build on top of a mine square.
Q: Can I upgrade a track tile with a minecart on it?
A: No. You may not upgrade any tile when a minecart is on it.
Q: Can I upgrade a track tile with Jewels on it?
A: Yes.
Q: Can I change direction of a minecart during my actions phase?
A: No. The direction you decide to finish pointing in at the end of your previous turn will be the direction you will move in this turn.
Q: What happens when a deposit appears onto a cart?
A: They go onto the track next to the minecart. Also, since the cart will begin its turn on that tile, it wont be able to pick them up when it moves away.
Q: Do you ever draw new mission cards once one has been taken, or do you only have the set dealt out at the beginning?
A: No, Mission cards are set numbers dealt at the beginning and shouldnt be replenished.
Q: When a cart gets to a cross location, I assume you can choose to turn instead of going straight ahead?
A: Minecarts direction is chosen during its move and at the end. If a minecart finishes on a cross tile it can point in any direction (apart from back on itself). If it moves over a cross junction, it can take any connected tile in any of the three directions (not back on itself).
Q: Is there any reason to take an action when both of your carts are dead during the chasm?
A: I would say not. A players turn would then just consist of just placing a chasm token in an attempt to hinder an opponent.
Q: At what moment do you check for all carts being off the board to cause the end game? (i.e. after a round, or after any given players turn).
A: At the end of a players turn, if all carts are off the board, the game ends. I have played a variant where when all players have left the board without intention of returning, but this became quite vague.
